We are taught to fix, reject, fight and resist our chronic illnesses, which, if we’re honest, often gets masked as ‘self improvement’ and ‘healing’. The result of that is that we live in a perpetual state of non-acceptance, making it very difficult to live any kind of life that serves, supports and fulfils us.

One of the biggest challenges we face as chronic illness folk is the impact the years of self-rejection has on our whole being. 

And yet, no one really talks about it.

As a community, we’re so focussed on the symptoms, so focussed on how we see the day-to-day of chronic illness impacting our lives, so focussed on #healing, that we kind of suffer in silence when it comes to the rest of it.

We don’t feel we can say ‘the way I feel about my chronic illness has made me hate the way I look’ or ‘I feel so paranoid about the food I eat for the fear of what it might result in’ or ‘the way I feel about my chronic illness has lead to me opting out of life, or conversely pushing so hard against it that I constantly ‘fail’ because it’s so out of alignment’.

But THAT’S the stuff that needs talking about! Living with chronic illness is one thing, but living with chronic illness compounded by all of that gunk is completely and utterly paralysing. Not only that, it has a HUGE impact on the symptomatic manifestation of chronic illness; it’s a vicious cycle that goes largely unnoticed.
